Our Vision is to create a place that all people of all ages can use to enjoy life in the center of Warren.
Woolen Mill Park will offer Children and Adults the following:
~ Wheelchair- and stroller-accessible walking paths that circle the Park and connect with Main St, Four Rod Road, the Alewive Run parking area and the St. George River.
~ Science and nature theme will be used to unify the various features of Woolen Mill Park and make it truly unique. The science/nature theme will be incorporated into the walkways and other aspects of the Park to engage kids and adults.
~ Landscaping to help delineate the paths and recreation areas, provide protection from the sun, and enhance the natural beauty of the area, which includes the river, shoreline and field. Low-maintenance native plants will be used to reduce water dependency and because they are well suited to native plant and animal species on the site.
~ Pavilion for group gatherings, performances and protection from the sun.
~ Benches and picnic tables for relaxing and eating.
~ Parking area that is easily accessible from Main Street and Four Rod Road.
What was the process for determining the design of Woolen Mill Park? Meetings were conducted to determine the best way to design the Park so that it meets the needs of all users. A local landscape architect provided three preliminary designs that were posted to the Town of Warren website The committee solicited feedback from Warren residents in the spring and summer of 2004 and organized an advisory committee made up of representatives of different community groups.
What were the results of the research process?
~ Develop the site of the old mill as a town common and greenspace ~ Provide group gathering spots and picnic areas ~ Make equipment suitable for people with physical limitations ~ Maintain park equipment and grounds
What are some of the benefits of greenspaces, according to experts? According to teachers, doctors, and community planning experts, greenspace recreation areas offer many benefits for children and adults of all ages including:
~ Provides place to exercise or relax individually or together ~ Develops a sense of common ownership and stewardship by community residents ~ Develops an appreciation of the unique environment in the heart of the community ~ Provides a location to socialze and hold family and community events
How was the site for Woolen Park chosen? The was chosen because it offers a large amount of open space, plenty of parking, is easily accessible, and has natural features along the river bank that are being used to create a unique setting for the Park.
How is Woolen Mill Park different from Payson Park on Rte. 90? Woolen Mill Park will be open at all times day and night. It will be easily accessible from the Warren Free Library and Main St. residential areas. While Payson Park offers picnic tables and play areas specially designed for children, Woolen Mill Park is much more of a traditional New England town common. Woolen Mill Park will also provide daily opportunities for residents to socialize while walking, exercising, fishing or sitting along the banks of the river.
